I've seen a few apps on this forum saying that the mod of an android app works on wearOS too but I haven't been able to find any discussions around it online. If I install the APK on the watch it just installs the phone version and not the wearOS version. Is there also any way to filter which apps support wearOS?

Search for wear os installer on the play store you need to put your watch into debug mode and connect wearos installer over Wifi.

Depends on your watch how to put it in dev mode.
