Enterprise: November 1961 (#2)
It is November 1961 and the doomsday clock is ticking.

In Berlin the tanks have pulled back from one Cold War flashpoint, Checkpoint Charlie but Thor and Jupiter medium-range ballistic missiles are still sitting on, or will soon be operational in England, Italy and Turkey and Soviet Leader Nikita Khruschev is still liberally declaiming threats to rain Armageddon upon the USSR’s foes.

In Washington DC the Kennedy Administration is preoccupied with Cuba, troubles in the deep South, and seemingly falling behind in the space race; it has problems enough at home and the mid-terms are already on the not so distant horizon. And besides, viewed from Capitol Hill, the frontline of the Cold War is an awfully long way away.

Not so for the RAF men manning the V-bombers and the Thor missile based in Eastern England who know that in the event of war four minutes is the best warning they are likely to get!

If only the world had known it, the countdown to war has reached eleven minutes to midnight…

Fallout Shelter: December 1961 (#3)
It is December 1961 and the doomsday clock is ticking.

The free and the unfree worlds live under the same dark shadow of a nuclear nightmare; and yet normal life continues. Love affairs flounder, stumble, bloom and life, even for those on the front line of the Cold War goes on, in the main without an excess of melodrama or untoward incident.

But beneath the surface that Cold War continues, brutally with little ceremony and less remorse as the agendas of the players constantly shift posture. ‘Great’ Britain’s power is visibly waning, that of the United States still rising to some as yet unseen, unimaginable zenith and the Russians, well, they just feel persecuted by everybody and suspect treachery at every turn.

In America schoolchildren hide under their desks in air raid drills, JFK exhorts his people to build fallout shelters as all around the clock Strategic Air Command B-52s and B-47s fly to failsafe points around the Soviet Empire, waiting for the recall signal that might not, one day, come.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight: January 1962 (#4)
January 1962 and the new year dawns with the West and the Soviet Union locked in rhetorical sabre-rattling, with both side’s leaders deaf to – or perhaps, more accurately – in denial about the other’s problems.

From sunny California to windswept Lincolnshire the shadow of war is ever-present, the leader of the free world exhorts his people to build bomb shelters, Nikita Khrushchev periodically threatens to rain nuclear brimstone on his enemies but for most people there is the routine of their normal lives, while the military go about their duties preparing for the worst. Thinking the unthinkable used to be the preserve of philosophers, sooth-sayers but not now.

Beneath the seething waters of international high politics an assassin is on the run in France, in Moscow the KGB have recalled its most ruthless manhunter to keep the lid on a brewing spy scandal, and to others their missteps in love almost but not quite, blind them to the madness of the world. From sunny California to Malta, to winter in England, life goes on beneath the gathering storm clouds.

The countdown to war has reached ten minutes to midnight…

Doomsday Blues: February 1962 (#5)
It is February 1962. John Glenn, the first American has finally contrived to orbit the Earth. In Laurel Canyon and Beverley Hills one journey pauses and another ends. In England Peter Christopher guiltily reflects on his prospective marriage to a woman he does not love and the likely end of his long-distance, relationship with Maria Calleja, as he goes about his work on board HMS Talavera at Chatham. In Washington and Moscow the spy game continues, wheels within wheels until it is unclear who exactly, is playing whom…

The only thing which is constant is the Cold War poison looming above the world.

The countdown to war has reached eight minutes to midnight…

The Great Storm: March 1962 (#6)
It is March 1962. A once in a century storm sweep up the East Coast of America and far inland. In England two friends yearn to go to sea again, the one to escape the other to mend the fences he has so careless broken. In Washington DC other conundrums are beginning to play out and the whims of the Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro threaten to open a Havana-Moscow can of worms. The tickertape has been cleared from the streets of Manhattan, nearly four thousand tons of it to celebrate John Glenn’s brief orbital journey but never more was the Space Race a proxy for a real war.

And the sleepwalk to war begins, imperceptibly to gather new pace. Vulcans of Bomber Command play practice war games; the B-52s of Strategic Air Command fly their doomsday failsafe missions over the Arctic, and the countdown to war continues…

The countdown to war has reached seven minutes to midnight…

West Side Story: April 1962 (#7)
It is April 1962. In retrospect, historians make the mistake of assuming that at the time people were able to join up the dots the way they do years, decades later; as if everybody had perfect knowledge of everything that was going on around them in the world. It was ever thus; being all-knowing long after the event.

In the spring of 1962 the Cold War is already hot and the seeds of disaster are being sown, casually, careless day by day while most people just get on with living their lives.

The countdown to war continues, hastening all the while.

And now the clock has reached six minutes to midnight…
