The Golden Vanity (1934): The economy has crashed, "safe" investments are suddenly worth a fraction of what they were, companies are going bankrupt, and mortgages are at risk. The leading minds all claim it was impossible for them to foresee, but are certain they know the solution. Is this the recent 2008 mortgage bubble crash? No, this is Isabel Paterson's novel about the Great Depression. Follow what happens to an aspiring actress, a writer, and a wealthy family whose son runs a Communist newspaper to see how they meet the challenges of economic collapse.

The Magpie's Nest (1917): Young Hope Fielding is having terrible luck with men. One tried to attack her. Another broke off his engagement to her when money problems arose, only to chase after a rich girl. The one man in her life who is charming, kind and rich is also much older than she... and married; Hope comes to realize that it would never work out. When she finally does get married after a chance encounter with an old flame, she finds out just days later that he has been carrying on an affair with one of her good friends, and they still love each other. So much trouble!

Hope finally decides that she is going to live for herself and never chase after men again. She leaves her town in Alberta, Canada for Seattle where she starts a modest career in newspapers, an industry where she find that the jobs available for women are relatively more liberated than other options. Later she moves to New York to find bigger opportunities.

And just her luck, a man enters her life again. Norris Carter is intrigued by Hope and after being brushed off several times, Hope finally relents and eventually starts to fall in love again. What happened to her vow? Will this romance finally work out or will she be stuck with her usual rotten luck?
